The difference in one line

A bill of lading can be traded; a waybill cannot. The original bill of lading must be surrendered to release the goods, which is what lets it secure payment in international trade. A waybill releases the goods to the named consignee on proof of identity, nothing more.

When a waybill is the right choice

Almost every domestic delivery, and international shipments between parties who trust each other or have already settled payment. It is faster: nobody has to courier an original document to the destination before the goods can be released.

When you need a bill of lading

When the goods secure the payment — a letter of credit, or a sale where the buyer must pay before taking possession — or when the goods may be sold on while at sea. The bank or buyer holds the original and releases it against payment.

What a sea waybill is

A non-negotiable ocean document that works like a road waybill: the carrier delivers to the named consignee without an original being presented. Used when a bill of lading’s security is not needed and its delays are unwelcome.

Sea waybill vs bill of lading in practice

Exporters who trade with the same buyer month after month usually switch from bills of lading to sea waybills once the relationship is established: goods are released on arrival without couriering originals, which removes the commonest cause of demurrage. Bills of lading come back into use the moment a bank is involved — a letter of credit will normally require a full set of original, negotiable bills.

Straight bill of lading

A bill of lading consigned to a named party and marked non-negotiable behaves much like a waybill: it cannot be endorsed to someone else. Some carriers still ask for the original to be surrendered, so check the terms; a sea waybill is the cleaner choice when you want release without paperwork.

Which one this site creates

The waybill maker creates commercial waybills, consignment notes and delivery notes for your own consignments. A bill of lading is issued by the carrier and cannot be created here.

Questions

Is a sea waybill a document of title?

No. A sea waybill is non-negotiable; the goods are released to the named consignee without presenting an original.

Can a waybill be used for exports?

Yes, alongside a commercial invoice and any customs paperwork the destination requires. It just does not provide the payment security a bill of lading does.

Who issues a bill of lading?

The ocean carrier or its agent, on receipt of the goods for shipment.
