Electrical quoting has one structural problem: you are pricing work on an installation you cannot fully see until you start opening things up, in a trade where the customer compares your figure against someone who has quoted without allowing for any of it.
The answer is not to guess low. It is to quote the visible work firmly, carry the invisible work as a stated assumption or a provisional rate, and put the certification on its own line so that the comparison the customer is making is an honest one.
Line items
What goes on an electrical quotation
Separate lines, so a customer trimming the job trims scope rather than your compliance.
Call-out or survey
Charged, or charged and credited against the job if it proceeds. Saying so converts better than doing it free, because free surveys signal that the price has the survey buried in it.
Labour
By day or by task, with the number of operatives. Where two people are needed for safe working, say why — it is the first thing a customer mentally deletes.
Materials
Itemised with specification: cable size, consumer unit make and way count, accessory range. “Sockets” and “brushed steel sockets” differ by a multiple and the customer is imagining the second.
Testing and certification
Its own line, named. Installation certificate, minor works certificate or condition report as applicable, issued on payment.
Making good
Chasing, patching, lifting and relaying flooring. State whether you plaster and decorate or leave it ready for a decorator — almost every dispute in domestic electrical work lives here.
Disposal
Old consumer units, cable and packaging. Small money, and its absence is noticed when a skip appears on the drive.

Avoid these
Where electrical quotes go wrong
- Certification folded into labour. You look more expensive than a competitor who left it out, and you cannot point at a line to explain why.
- No assumption stated about existing circuits. Add it: the price assumes existing circuits are serviceable and correctly earthed. Without that line, remediation is your problem.
- Making good left undefined. “Chased and patched, ready for decoration” is a scope. Silence means the customer expects paint.
- Access not mentioned. Boarded lofts, fitted kitchens, solid floors and furniture that needs moving all change the labour. Say what the price assumes about access.
- Parts priced at today's cost with a long validity. Copper and consumer-unit prices move. Keep the validity to 30 days or state that material prices are subject to confirmation at order.
- Out-of-hours not excluded. Retail and office work drifts towards evenings and weekends after acceptance. Price normal hours and name the uplift.

Questions
Questions
How do you quote for electrical work?
Price the job in three parts: the labour to do it, the materials list, and the testing and certification that has to follow. The certificate is not an optional extra and quoting without it makes you look cheaper than a compliant competitor while leaving you to absorb the cost.
What should an electrical quotation include?
Call-out or survey, labour by day or by task, the materials list with specifications, testing and certification, making good, and disposal of the old installation. State which certificate the job requires and that it is issued on payment.
Should an electrical quote include the certificate?
Include it as a priced line rather than folding it into the labour. It shows the customer that certification is real work with a real cost, and it protects you against a customer who later argues they only agreed to pay for the installation.
How do I quote for a job where the wiring condition is unknown?
Quote the known work fixed and carry the unknown as a provisional sum or an hourly rate for investigation, stated on the quotation. In older properties, add an explicit line saying the price assumes the existing circuits are serviceable and what happens if they are not.
Do I need a separate quotation for solar or EV charger installs?
The format is the same, but the line items differ: survey, equipment, mounting and fixings, electrical connection, commissioning, and any grid or network application. Where an application has a third-party fee, exclude it or show it at cost.
